Introduction
This little book of deliverance is a pocket guide of practical aspects
of deliverance. You might like to keep it with you as you minister, and
refer to any prayers as you need them. Deliverance is by faith in the
name of Jesus, using the discernment of the Holy Spirit. This is not a
recipe book that can be relied on to effect deliverance. It does not
contain the complete teaching on all aspects of this ministry. There
are different ways of ministering deliverance. This booklet was
prepared primarily to assist and train those ministering deliverance at
evangelism events, but it can equally well be used as a guide for
ministering deliverance in the pastoral setting. The material for this
booklet was learned from the teachings of the Argentinian evangelist
Carlos Annacondia, and gathered while the author has worked with him
over many years.

Some
principles of deliverance
Deliverance is an act of love and compassion, which frees a person from
the consequences of their sin.
Remember that you are dealing with a person, not demons. Always act in
love, with gentleness and respect. Before laying hands on someone for
prayer, always ask for permission first. It may be necessary to speak
firmly to the spirits, but be careful not to shout, even in tense
moments.
Always keep confidentiality. Do not preach or pass judgement.
Question the person in a simple and gentle way to find the
problem.
Be in submission to those leading the deliverance team, and use the
guidelines that they give, even if you know other ways. Lack of
submission, or division, makes the job of deliverance difficult. Don't
pray aloud in tongues while ministering deliverance, and don't mention
the blood of Jesus, which will enrage the demons.
Be careful with the words you use during the deliverance time. Saying
things like `this person will never get free` will make the spirits
more reluctant to leave. Always minister and pray with your eyes open.
When the person is manifesting, observe any actions, which may reveal
the problem.
If you are not sure how to proceed, ask someone with more
experience for help.
Prepare yourself before ministry: walk in holiness, ask for the gift of
discernment, and ask for faith for deliverance. Believe that 'these
signs will accompany those who believe; in my name they will drive out
demons.'
As far as possible, let men minister to men, and women to women. Take
care with your sitting position, and where you place your hands. The
person receiving ministry should sit facing the wall, or away from
distractions, and the person ministering should sit at their side, but
facing them. Do not embrace or caress the person during the ministry.
Children, pregnant women, and the elderly should be ministered to
separately. As far as possible, children should be kept out of the
deliverance area. Spiritual agreements can be broken over these
persons, but spirits should not be rebuked. Children should only
receive ministry with the agreement of their parents. The parents
should also receive ministry.
Deliverance can only be ministered with the conscience and will of a
person. If a person is drunk or severely mentally retarded, they should
not receive ministry. While a lot of mental illness is caused by
demonic activ ity, wisdom and experience is needed to help a person
with mental illness. This is because a mentally ill person may put
undue emphasis on the demonic activity, thus causing fear and confusion.
Deliverance is for people who have received Jesus as their Lord and
Saviour. Anyone who seeks deliverance should first be led in a prayer
of salvation. If they are not ready for this, say a prayer of blessing
for them, pray for any needs and then send them on their way. In some
cases, it might be right to pray for deliverance for a person who us
not yet saved, if it is clear that the person has repented of the
activity that caused the entrance of the evil spirit.
Satan has been defeated by the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Believers have been given authority over Satan. The devil and
his forces have to obey a believer when they command
something in the name of Jesus. If the believer commands an evil spirit
to leave a place or a person, then that spirit has to leave.
When we bind a spirit in an area or place, we spiritually tie it up so
that it is not able to influence the person. Binding a spirit in the
name of Jesus, does not force the spirit to leave a person.
When we rebuke a spirit, we are commanding it to leave a person or
area. This can be likened to a spiritual punch. If we rebuke a
particular spirit over a person, especially if we lay our hands on
their head as we say it, and the person has not renounced that spirit,
then there will be a reaction or manifestation, as the spirit tries to
leave, but cannot. This might be accompanied by violent movements,
screams, falling down or a state of unconsciousness. For
rebuking to be effective, it must be done with a revelation of
authority, and with a discernment of the spirits that are present. In
this way rebuking can be continued until there is a sense that the
spirit in question has been dealt with.
Demons gain entry into a person’s life because of sin; they are able to
remain there, even when the person becomes a Christian,
because of a conscious or sub-conscious agreement or covenant, which
the person has made with that spirit. Until the person
confesses the sin, and renounces this agreement, the spirit will not
leave, even though it is rebuked. When a person persistently sins in an
area of their lives, then they surrender authority over that area to
Satan. When a person says, ‘I’ll never forgive him!’, then they are
sub-consciously making an agreement, or covenant with a
spirit of unforgiveness. Such a covenant or agreement then allows this
spirit of unforgiveness into that person’s life, where it can cause a
variety of spiritual problems, such as depression. However, when this
spirit is confessed and renounced, the person ministering has authority
to break the agreement, and the spirit can be sent out.
The aim of the deliverance session is not to check for every
possible, or typical form of spiritual problem. Rather, by reliance on
the Holy Spirit, the aim is to discover the main things that a person
needs to confess. There might also be some things that the Holy Spirit
does not highlight because the time is not right.
Deliverance occurs by the Holy Spirit. Those who minister deliverance
must rely on the Holy Spirit, and on the spiritual gifts of discernment
and words of knowledge that He imparts. For this reason, it is best
learned not only by attending a seminar, but by ministering alongside a
more experienced person.
Steps in deliverance
1. Binding the demons
If a person experiences a manifestation, the person ministering should
do as follows: Place their hand on the person’s head, and say in a
clear voice:
'I bind you in the name of Jesus.'
If the person appears to be in a trance with eyes closed, using the
person`s name say:
'_________-san, don't be afraid. Jesus is here. Open your eyes in the
name of Jesus.' 'Take control of your mind and body now in the name of
Jesus.'
2.
Surrendering the person to Jesus
If the person receiving deliverance is not known to you, once
the person has come round, ask them their name. Ask them if they have
already committed their life to Jesus. If not, invite them to do this.
Ask them if they would like to get free. If they agree, ask them to
repeat the following prayer with you.
'Lord Jesus, I give you my life. I give you my body, soul and spirit. I
renounce the world, the flesh and the devil. By your Holy Spirit, help
me now to remember the sins of the past that I need to confess to get
free. And you can cleanse me, forgive me and make me free. In the name
of Jesus, Amen.'
3. Identifying the sins that have
given entry
Question the person under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to identify
all the sins that have allowed the devil to influence the person. It
may be helpful to note the sins, explaining to the person that this is
only to enable you to pray for the person. Even if the person says they
don't have a problem, if the person agrees, continue to question to
find the entry point. Don't offer counsel, pass judgement, or console
the person. Look for the sin that the person has committed whether it
be conscious, sub-conscious, voluntary or involuntary. If the Holy
Spirit so leads, you might have to ask very intimate questions to
enable a person to get free, such as 'have you ever prostituted your
body?' or 'have you ever had sexual relations with a close relative?'.
The person may feel that because they have received counsel for an
issue in the past, they don’t need to discuss the matter again. If the
Holy Spirit has highlighted the issue again, you will have to gently
explain, that although they have received counsel, they have not yet
received deliverance of the consequences of that sin.
Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, it is important to find the root
cause of the spiritual problem. It may be necessary to ask about what
has happened in the person’s childhood, and to minister to any causes
found. For example, if someone is an alcoholic, it will be necessary to
find out what has caused this, such as an abusive relationship with the
person’s father.
Helpful questions may be as follows. This is not a complete
list to be worked through. These are suggestions of possible questions.
What are the problems in your life?
What happened to you when the evangelist prayed? (during a campaign)
Have you ever visited a witch, fortune teller or anything like that?
Have you been involved in any occultic activities, such as divination?
Have you ever been taken to a shrine, or visited a shrine or temple?
What happened when you went there?
Do you have any alters or charms in your home?
Is there anyone that you need to forgive; for example, your parents,
family members, neighbours, your husband?
Do you have feelings of resentment, bitterness or hatred towards anyone?
Have you ever had extra-marital sexual relationships, before or during
your marriage?
Have you ever had an abortion (woman) or had one of your children
aborted?
Have you ever attempted suicide?
Have you ever been sexually abused or raped?
Have you ever viewed pornography?
How was your childhood / adolescence? How was your
relationship with your father, mother, your siblings and
friends?
Do you have a problem with your anger?
Do you have any addiction problems?
Do you have any types of fear? (fear of losing control, fear of
not being accepted, fear of men etc)
4. Renouncing the sins that have
given entry
Once all the entry points have been found, lead the person in a prayer
of renunciation according to the sins they have. It might be helpful to
lead the person in a general prayer of renunciation at the beginning.
An example is found at the end of this booklet.
Examples of renunciation:
In the case of fornication:
Lord Jesus, I renounce the sin of fornication, which I committed with
_______-san, ___________-san. Forgive me Lord. I renounce the covenant
that I made with this spirit. I renounce the authority that I gave
these persons over my body. I renounce the covenants (soul ties) that I
made with these persons. I renounce all the spirits that were
transferred to my body because of this sin.
And the person ministering then prays:
'I break the covenant with the spirit of fornication now in the name of
Jesus.'
In the case of someone who has had an abortion:
Lord Jesus, I renounce the spirit of homicide by abortion. I renounce
the covenant that I made with this spirit. I renounce all guilt
associated with this sin. Forgive me Lord. (You should also ask if the
person has ever attempted suicide.)
And the person ministering then prays:
'I break the covenant with the spirit of homicide by abortion, and with
the spirit of guilt, now in the name of Jesus.'
In the case of sexual abuse:
Lord Jesus, I totally forgive my uncle for what he did to me. I
renounce the authority that he took over my body. I renounce all
spirits that were transferred to my body because of this sin. I
renounce all fear, guilt and hatred associated with this event.
And the person ministering then prays:
'I break the covenant with the spirits of guilt, fear, and hatred now
in the name of Jesus.'
In the case of someone who has worshipped at a family altar (butsudan):
Lord Jesus, I renounce the sin of ancestor worship. I renounce the
covenant that I made with the spirit of ancestor worship. I renounce
all spirits that came into my life because of this sin. Specifically, I
renounce all fear and guilt that have come into my life because of this
sin.
And the person ministering then prays:
'I break the covenant with the spirit of ancestor worship, fear and
guilt now in the name of Jesus.'
In the case of someone who has been taken to a shine as a child, or
worshipped at a shrine:
Lord Jesus I renounce the sin of idolatory that I committed at the
shrines of ___________ (name of shrine). I renounce the covenant that I
made with the spirits ____________ (name) of those shrines. I renounce
the power of all charms, wishes, prayers and fortunes that I brought
into my home from this shrine. I renounce all spirits that
came into my life through my visit to this shrine in the name of Jesus.
And then person ministering then prays:
`I break the covenant with the spirit of idolatory and with the spirit
of ____________ (name of shrine) now in the name of Jesus.'
In the case of someone who is experiencing symptoms of generational
curse: (unusual levels of sickness, family problems, mental health and
financial problems).
Lord Jesus, I renounce the sins of my ancestors. I renounce all curses
that have come to my life as a result of the actions of my forefathers
or other persons.
And the person ministering then prays:
'I break all covenants with the spirit of family curse, and curses of
idolatory, over this person now, in the name of Jesus. I break the
covenant with the spirit of fear in the name of Jesus.
In the case of wounds from childhood; for example, someone who was
rejected by their father.
Lord Jesus, I totally forgive my father for rejecting me, and for all
that he did to me. I renounce all spirits of rejection, and I renounce
all anger and resentment that came to my life because of what happened
to me. Lord, I honour my father.
And the person ministering then prays:
'I break the covenant with the spirit of rejection, now in the name of
Jesus.'
In the case of someone who experiences extreme or uncontrolled anger:
Lord Jesus, renounce the agreement that I have made with the spirit of
anger. I totally forgive those people _____________ (recall names) who
have harmed me and caused me to experience anger, in the name of Jesus.
And the person ministering then prays:
'I break the covenant with the spirit of anger and unforgiveness, now
in the name of Jesus.'
In the case of someone who experiences fear:
Lord Jesus, renounce the agreement that I have made with the spirit of
fear. I renounce all fear of ____________(name of feared thing). I
totally forgive those people _____________ (recall names) who have
harmed me and caused me to experience fear, in the name of Jesus.
And the person ministering then prays:
'I break the covenant with the spirit of fear, now in the name of
Jesus.'
5. Expel the demons
Ask the person if there is anything else that they want to confess. If
not, explain that you would like to pray for the person. Place your
hand on the person’s head, and say in a strong clear voice, using the
names of all the spirits that have been uncovered.
‘I command all unclean spirits to leave now in the name of Jesus;
spirit of ___________, spirit of ____________, spirit of
_______________. Loose this person, devil, in the name of Jesus.’
There may be a short pause, before the person experiences the sensation
of something leaving their body. If the person starts to scream or
shout, order the spirit to come out in silence. If the person tries to
harm themselves, order the spirit to come out without harming the
person. The sign that the person has become free, is a change in their
face, a lightness and peace in their body, and a joy. Ask the person
how they feel.
If the person experiences a manifestation that continues, this means
that there is something blocking their freedom. There is something else
to be discovered and renounced. Bring the person back to consciousness,
and pray as follows:
'Holy Spirit, show me the sin that I need to confess now in order to
get free.' Once you have found the sin, repeat stages 4 and 5.
6.
The person declares themselves free
When working in an evangelism event setting, ask the co-ordinator of
your sector to come and verify that the deliverance has been effective.
In the pastoral setting, this stage should be carried out by the person
leading the deliverance session. The co-ordinator will then lead the
person in the following prayer.
'Lord Jesus, I declare myself free of all evil spirits. Thank you for
setting me free.'
The co-ordinator will then place his hand on the head of the person and
pray for the filling of the Holy Spirit. The person may fall down. It
is important to note the manner in which they fall. Unusual movements
or crying could signify the need for further deliverance. The person
should then be guided to a counsellor who notes their details for
follow-up.
7. Prayer of Renunciation:
Lord Jesus Christ I believe that you are the Son of God and the only
way to God. I believe that you died on the cross for my sin and rose
again from the dead. I have confessed and renounced my sin. I have
trusted in you for mercy and forgiveness and by faith I receive your
forgiveness.
I confess all my sins. I specifically renounce the following sexual
sins…. And all pleasure associated with them.
If I have any resentment or bitterness or hatred or unforgiveness - by
a decision of my will I now forgive those persons as I want God to
forgive me. I lay down bitterness, hatred, rebellion and all evil
attitudes.
I specifically honour my parents and I forgive them. I renounce all the
sins of my ancestors.
I break every contact with ancestor worship, shrine worship and the
occult. Whatever there may be in my possession or in my home or
anywhere else that links me to Satan, I renounce it totally now. I will
not be involved in these things any longer and I ask you to forgive me
for them now.
And now, Lord Jesus, you see right inside me and you know every problem
that I have, you know if there are any evil spirits there. I want to
tell you Lord that if they are there, they are my enemies, they are not
my friends. I hate them and I no longer give them any place in my life.
I claim the promise of your word- whoever shall call on the name of the
Lord shall be delivered. I call upon your name, for deliverance, as a
believer. I take the authority your word gives me, and I release myself
from those evil powers. I take authority over them. I compel them to
leave me now. In the name of Jesus I expel them.
Amen
For self study
1. Are these statements true or false? Mark them True or False.
When a person confesses their sin, it's good to teach them so they
don't repeat it.
Never mention the blood of Jesus when ministering.
It's good to discuss the details of what happened with the person's
pastor.
During the crusade it's important to use the method of deliverance
taught by the co-ordinator.
If the person cannot get free as you rebuke the demons in stage 5, you
should order the demons to come out by vomit.
2. Complete this statement:
Deliverance is an act of _________ and compassion, which frees a person
from the _________________ of their sin.
3. How can you be sure that a person has become free?
4. If someone has visited a prostitute, what are the 3 things that the
person has to renounce to get free?
5. What gives a demon entry into a person's life?
6. What gives the demon the right to stay in a person's life?
For group study
You will watch a demonstration of deliverance. At each stage, advise
those who are ministering what to do. Divide into groups of three.
Work together to answer the following questions:
1. A person arrives for ministry, but after praying for the person,
they still don't open their eyes. What would you do?
2. If you are ministering to a person in stage 5 and they continue to
manifest after you have told the demons to leave, what would you do?
3. If the person says that they cannot forgive their partner for what
they did, what would you say?
4. In turn each person in the triplet should choose a sin from the
following list. They should not reveal it to the others. The other 2
persons in the group then question the person to find the sin, and lead
them in renouncing the sin. Be sure to use the steps outlined above.
Choose from the following list:
Abortion, attempted suicide, visited a fortune teller, sexually abused
as a child, committed adultery, had sex with a prostitute, cannot
forgive wife or husband, possesses a charm from a shrine.
